Today is National Aboriginal Day and festivities are taking place on Mount McKay on Fort William First Nation.
Thunder Bay’s Aboriginal Liason Officer Ann Magiskan tells us the morning started steeped in tradition, with a sunrise ceremony before 6.
The day was created to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples of Canada.
The city is providing shuttle service for the day.
Opening ceremonies get underway at noon, and a pow wow is set for one o’clock.
Magiskan tells us part of the healing process is being better educated on the history of First Nations in Canada.
Activities for the day recognizing Indigenous heritage and culture are taking place until nine o’clock tonight at Mount McKay.
Meanwhile, Red Sky Metis Independent Nation is going to be celebrating Indigenous People’s Day at the Spirit Gardens this afternoon.
Community members and the Fort William Historical Park will be telling stories, beading, and talking about animal tracks.
Their events get underway at noon and will wrap up at 6:30.
