A quiet start to the forest fire season.
Not too many blazes have reported since the April 1st start. The latest forest fire reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources is approximately 3 kilometres north of Nolalu, around 1.5 hectares in size and listed as not under control.
The fire hazard is considered low except in the area of Red Lake, where it’s listed as high to extremely high. There’s one uncontrolled, 3.7-hectare fire in that area that’s been burning since Sunday afternoon, and another 0.2-hectare blaze has been active since Friday. It’s listed as under control.
Rain in the forecast on the weekend has helped to dampen the hazard.
The MNR says they’ve dealt with fires that have been mostly caused by humans, not heat or lightning.
Spokesperson Jonathan Scott reminds you if you are having campfires this weekend, make sure to always have someone attending the fire, always have water handy, and keep it sheltered from the wind.
Scott also says it is important to always have someone monitoring the fire, and making sure it’s fully out before you leave.
