Thunder Bay police are countering local social media postings suggesting women should be aware gangs may be out to abduct them for sex trafficking purposes.
Those stories involve tales of gangs “trying to abduct girls,” shooting them up with “any drugs they have on them” and forcing them into sex slavery in other northern communities.
In one case the author claims, someone recently tried to grab a nurse “walking from the hangar to the hospital.”
In a Facebook post, Detective Inspector Ryan Hughes notes it’s difficult to investigate stories on social media since it’s hard to sort out what is truth and what is an urban legend.
He says because the social media stories “go in all different directions…it’s tough for the police…to investigate.”
However, the detective inspector insists they have not received reports of any gang-related abductions in the city and that each story of an attempted kidnapping is always followed up.
Detective Inspector Ryan Hughes discusses the gang reality in Thunder Bay.
