This week on Thunder Bay Votes: The issues that matter, living on the edge, homelessness and poverty.
What should the in-coming city council do to address poverty in Thunder Bay? We took our news mic into the community to ask.
Some differing opinions on how to use money. One person said funding is not the answer, we need to first figure out what’s happening to those in poverty, as it’s a repeated cycle. Another pointed to a broken justice system as being the problem.
One the other hand, one said a social deficit is being created, and more money is needed to solve that. More programs for younger people is needed, to educate them. A few want the basic income project returned, with one adding greater pressure on government would help.
A few people want politicians to stop lying and finger pointing. Another idea is for government to get out there and see what’s really going on, while another noted we need to get to the root cause, retrain them, and deal with high rent.
It was also noted it’s easier for society to ignore things like homelessness and poverty, but when it’s crime, people start paying attention, if they’re affected.
One added this is a complex issue, can’t be answered in a few words, and while someone else couldn’t offer a solution due to not knowing poverty.
