Westgate is now a merged high school with Churchill, with officials welcoming back over a thousand students.
Principal Coral Szyszka tells us they’ve done a lot of work to bring the students together.
“There were a lot of smiles, a lot of positive energy in the school. A lot of enthusiasm about what the school is turning into with the renovation plans. Things are going really really well.”
Grade 12 student Marlon Legarde came from Churchill and tells us it’s been a pretty normal start to the school season.
“They’re welcoming, amidst everyone there are still a lot of familiar faces and everyone is friendly, I find it nice.”
Grade 12 student Cameron Johnsen tells us their transition committees worked really hard to bring the two student populations together.
“So there’s lots of opportunities for the two school communities to mix and mingle, make new friends. It looks like it paid off, things appear to be going well.”
Parts of the school are under construction including an improved cafeteria that’s set to be finished by January.
