The term eclipse has its roots in ancient Greek and comes from the word ékleipsis which means to fail or to abandon.
Thunder Bay is only getting a partial solar eclipse – which means the Moon only partially covers the disk of the Sun.
During a total solar eclipse, the moon moves between the sun and Earth, completely obscuring the sun’s face. Those in the path of totality witness a darkened sky akin to early morning or twilight. If weather conditions allow, observers along this path can view the sun’s corona, a ghostly white ring typically overshadowed by the sun’s intense brightness.
In areas outside the path of totality, the moon also crosses in front of the sun and Earth, but the alignment is not precise. Consequently, only a section of the sun is obscured, creating a crescent shape.
How to watch the eclipse:
Never look directly at the Sun. You can seriously hurt your eyes, and even go blind. Proper eye protection, like eclipse glasses or a special solar filter, is the only safe option.
1. Know When to Use Eclipse Glasses
This means:
All the time during a partial eclipse
The following materials should NEVER be used to view a solar eclipse: sunglasses of any kind; color film; medical X-ray film; smoked glass
The only glasses that should be used to look at a partially eclipsed sun is with eclipse glasses that meet an international standard, ISO 12312-2.
If you can’t find approved eclipse glasses, you can create a pinhole camera as an alternative viewing method.
2. How to Use Eclipse Glasses
Hold the eclipse glasses with two hands
Stand with the front of your body toward the Sun, but look down
Still looking down, put the eclipse glasses onto your face
When they are securely fastened, raise your head and look up at the Sun
Thunder Bay will have a partial solar eclipse, with around 75% of the sun being covered by the moon. The duration of the peak coverage during the partial eclipse in Thunder Bay will be approximately 3 minutes and 44.4 seconds.
Weather conditions may influence visibility, so residents are advised to be prepared for potential cloud cover.
Even if the sky is partially cloudy, there’s a chance of seeing the sun through high cirrus clouds, providing an opportunity for observation.
