Thunder Bay Police are warning you to be suspicious of callers asking you for money in the form of prepaid credit cards or gift cards, after reports of scam calls targeting local phone numbers.
One victim got a call from someone posing as an RBC Visa investigator, claiming their money was being spent on Ebay.
The fraudster said that to resolve the problem, the victim needed to load prepaid Mastercard Joker cards and send them to the caller.
The victim told police they were then scammed out of $6,000.
Police say they have heard about a number of similar incidents happening recently.
They remind you that no legitimate organization will contact you and ask for payment in gift cards or prepaid credit cards.
