A pair of games in the Superior International Junior Hockey League Friday, including Game Three of the Teleco Cup between the Kam River Fighting Walleye and Thunder Bay North Stars.
The green and white took the first two games last weekend by a combined score of 9-6 and lead the eight game series with two points.
Fighting Walleye Head Coach Matt Valley recognizes how good the North Stars are, in particular an 18 year old who played in the Thunder Bay Kings system.
“They have guys like Nikolas Campbell on the other side that, frankly, I don’t see too many teams in this league for sure having an answer for a guy like Campbell, he’s a special talent. You can come up with a game plan for him [that you think is effective], he’ll still make a play so we need to find a way to make plays too,” says Valley.
North Stars Head Rob DeGagne likes what the Fighting Walleye have done, and feels they can be a dangerous team at home.
“If [they build their team around the NorWest Arena] they’re going to be successful. You look at teams like Red Lake [Miners] and Dryden [GM Ice Dogs] they’ve done that in terms of assembling their squads with the smaller rinks [whereas] us, Fort Frances [Lakers] and Thief River [Falls Norskies] have to be different in the way the team is assembled [based on the fact that] our rinks are bigger,” says DeGagne.
