According to Wikipedia Halloween costumes comes from Scotland in 1585. There are many references to the custom during the 18th and 19th centuries in the Celtic countries of Scotland, Ireland, Mann and Wales. It has been suggested that the custom comes from the Celtic festivals of Samhain and Calan Gaeaf, or from the practise of “souling” during the Christian observance of Allhallowtide. Halloween costumes are traditionally based on frightening supernatural or folkloric beings. In the last 100 years or so Costumes have changed a bit… instead of supernatural beings we dress up as popular characters in media. In the 50’s there were lots of Lone Rangers or Davy Crockets. The 60’s brought us Looney Tunes and Bambi’s, in the 70’s there were little Casper’s and Batman’s running around. The 80’s we saw Mr. T and My Little Ponies, the next decade kids were Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers. In 2020 what do we dress up like? People from social media. Oh we have come a long way from 1585. Do you know who I’m supposed to be? Grandma might be confused.
