Several organizations in our community are postponing events in light of COVID-19 concerns.
Magnus Theatre is cancelling all of its remaining performances of Cottagers and Indians. Officials say “it was a difficult decision to make in these rapidly changing circumstances, the health and safety of everyone in our community continue to be their top priority at Magnus Theatre. ” Box Office staff will be contacting patrons directly to offer alternative ticket and programming options.
The North of Superior Film Association’s 2020 film festival is also cancelled. They say they will resume their operations at Silver City in the fall.
Folklore Festival 2020 is also being cancelled by the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association and the Folklore Festival Organizing Committee for the safety of all Folklore Festival visitors,
performers, vendors, volunteers, and participants.
The 2020 NOMA Annual Conference & AGM taking place in Fort Frances, April 29 to May 1, 2020, is also cancelled. The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association board recognizes the importance of implementing a pro-active approach to minimizing contact to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
“Over the past few days, more information has come to light that we need to do more to flatten the curve. By cancelling events that bring more than 250 people together, we are doing our part to keep our municipalities and region safe,” said Mayor Wendy Landry, NOMA president.
Thunder Bay Art Gallery is temporarily closed to the public, beginning today until further notice. Currently scheduled events and programs are cancelled and/or rescheduled for a later date.
There are currently no confirmed COVID-19 cases in Thunder Bay. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is urging you to self-isolate for 14 days if you have been out of the country. Authorities are also urging you to get your news on COVID-19 from credible news sources and that the Health Unit will be confirming any cases which show up in the district.
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre has implemented restrictions as well. Only one person is allowed to visit any patient at any time and that person must be designated by the patient. Everyone entering the hospital is being screened. There is also an assessment centre set up just outside the hospital’s Emergency Department.
Screening protocols are also taking place at all city-run and private long term care facilities.
Public and Catholic schools in Thunder Bay will be closed until at least April 5th. Confederation College and Lakehead University have suspended classes this week in order to formulate an online learning plan for students.
