Two local buildings will be recognized for their cultural importance and heritage value.
City Council agreed to add the Centennial Botanical Conservatory on Dease Street and the Paramount Theatre on Court Street South to the Heritage Register.
The Conservatory dates back to 1967 and the theatre was opened in 1948.
City officials say it also gives them the ability to delay any plans to demolish the buildings for up to 60 days while they consider officially designating them as heritage properties.
Councillor Mark Bentz was impressed with the way it highlights the history of the two local properties.
“I mean, I had no idea about this theatre. I guess I knew about the Centennial project, but I didn’t know how it came to be, and how important it was in Canada at the time,” he notes.
The information will be available on the city’s website.
Meanwhile, there are more delays in the process of possibly designating the Dease Pool property a heritage site.
The report was originally due back on Monday, then city staff proposed bringing it back in late November.
Last night, Council heard the report will be presented at an unspecified date in December, so that it can be heard at the same time as an update on the future of the Dease Pool property.
