New Zealand Police say they’ve confirmed a 50th victim in Friday’s Christchurch mosque shootings.
In an update yesterday, they explained 36 people are still in the hospital. Eleven of them are in critical condition, including a four-year-old child.
They confirm they have started identifying the victims.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says officials aim to return the bodies of all of the victims to their families by Wednesday.
In the aftermath of the shootings, the country’s lawmakers are looking at how to prevent future attacks.
Late last night, Ardern indicated they’re taking action right away.
“We will have a conversation at Cabinet tomorrow, a discussion around any potential reform. Obviously, I’ve already indicated there will be changes to our gun laws.”
Police say they have taken one more person into custody who isn’t linked to the attacks.
They say they also found no evidence that two others who were taken into custody Friday were connected to the shooting.
One of those two has been released while the other remains in custody on an unspecified charge.
One 28-year-old Australian man is facing a murder charge in connection to the attacks.
Arrests and outcomes: In addition to the 28-year-old man who appeared in court yesterday, two people were arrested after the attacks and held in custody.
At this stage there is no indication that they are connected to the attacks.
