Thunder Bay Police are taking to the airways with their brand new drone.
Sgt. Gordon Snyder tells us they’ll be using it at collisions, and in search and rescue cases.
“We’ll be able to get aerial shots of collision scenes as well as any type of outdoor scene that we may have. Also for the search of missing people. Obviously, it’s difficult to search wooded areas or areas that are hard to get to by foot. Now we will be able to get to those areas with the drone.”
It’s expected the new drone will be able to handle our cold temperatures and comes with several rechargeable batteries.
Officials tell us they’ll also be able to use the new aerial technology to respond to critical incidents like stand-offs.
They add more eyes on a scene will greatly enhance officer and public safety.
Sgt. Snyder notes the drone is high tech and isn’t the kind you can pick up at a local electronics store.
Officers tasked with the operation of the drone have received extensive training and certification.
