The city is expecting to be around $3.6 million under budget this year, which has one councillor raising her eyebrows.
Rebecca Johnson tells us a surplus of that size makes her wonder if the city is budgeting correctly.
“Which says we could’ve provided the community a decrease of 1.4%, at this point in time, this is with the 3rd quarter variance.”
Johnson also points out the police service is around $250,000 over budget.
The Councillor-at-Large argues while it’s good the city is projecting it’ll come in under budget, that extra money could have stayed in taxpayers’ pockets.
“It’s something I think we should very seriously look at, as we budget into a new year, and we’re trying to cut our taxes, and yet we’ve over budgeted by $3.6-million at this point.”
Johnson feels the city should end the fiscal year with a balanced budget, not a surplus or over budget.
