The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is moving into the digital age to dispense opioids.
Chief of Staff Dr. Gordon Porter explains they are testing new software which helps them provide the best and safest ways to manage a patient’s pain after surgery.
Porter tells us the pilot project is designed to help reduce the use of opioids during recovery.
According to the hospital, when pain and medication are controlled properly, patients can recover quicker and be home sooner.
He also calls it “part of the whole spectrum of addictions” since some patients who are addicted to opioids can “become a real challenge” before and after they have surgery.
