Building the new outdoor classroom at Kingsway Park Public School is being called an incredible experience for all, especially students at Sioux North High School who took part.
Some 45 students were involved in the planning and construction of the timber-framed winterized structure.
Sioux Lookout instructor Mathew Culham says the program is very important.
“[Students] are developing skills that can be transferred into other aspects of students’ lives, if they decide to go into construction or carpentry down the road.”
He notes there were other benefits.
“Being able to provide an opportunity for students that I teach to be role models for younger students was a goal that might have revealed itself after the fact.”
Culham says he felt great pride in his students for what they were able to accomplish and give back to another school community.
15 students also travelled to Thunder Bay to help erect the structure at Kingsway.
