City firefighters are reminding you to be careful this Thanksgiving long weekend.
Spokesperson Anthony Stokaluk says if you plan on deep-frying a turkey, make sure it’s outside and in a safe place.
He recommends setting deep-frying equipment up on a non-combustible surface like pavement, pointing out it poses a fire risk on wood decks.
Not paying attention to your cooking can also have consequences.
Stokaluk says as long as you have your stove on, you should be in the kitchen keeping an eye on your Thanksgiving meal.
“Kitchen fires are the number one cause of all residential structural fires, and usually, that’s because people are leaving the kitchen while they’re cooking.”
He says your tabletop decor could pose a risk.
“Candles are always a concern, and similar to a stove, you don’t ever want to leave a room that has a candle in it.”
“If you have to leave a room with candles in it, just blow them out before you leave.”
