Taxation in northern Ontario is the focus of a conference in North Bay this week.
The Northern Policy Insitute is hosting their annual State of the North Conference.
President Charles Cirtwell says they examining taxation as a way of growing the region’s economy and the alternatives to the existing system.
“In Northern Ontario, it’s becoming more and more difficult for our communities to be able to find the money to keep the bridges safe, keep the water clean and to offer other services as well.”
Cirtwell tells us different taxing policies are being explored to see how they could be tried in northern Ontario.
“It’s a complex conversation that you can’t decide on the fly and that’s why we are talking about it in detail over two days.”
The conference wraps up today.
The information compiled from the conference will be made available to the government, opposition parties and other interested organizations.
