Doug Ford is at the forefront of another controversy.
The Conservative government recently announced a new free-speech policy for Ontario’s universities.
Ford says the policy is to ensure every student has a voice, and can be heard.
“Students will have open and free speech, open dialogue, open debate, and they aren’t going to be shut down by the special-interest groups or the universities.” Ford says. “They’re going to be able to voice their opinion.”
“When I travelled around this province, all I heard is how free speech is being stifled,” The Premier claims.
The PCs hope to have the policy in place by January 1, 2019.
The Ontario chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students calls the proposed policy an overstep, and a blatant attack on academic institutions and student groups.
According to the government, schools that don’t abide could potentially lose operating grant funding, and students will face existing school disciplinary measures. (File Photo)
