In health news, today is World COPD Day.
Spokesperson Calvin Young says it’s to draw awareness to a sometimes debilitating disease many in the community have but don’t realize it.
“We want to celebrate it because we want the public to know where they can go for help, what is available and who is available for COPD.”
Young adds many people don’t know about COPD, including those with the disease. “Most cases are caused by smoking, a lot of it is done with pollutants in the air, wood smoke. Every four minutes someone will die of COPD, it’s not a disease that’s curable. Lots of people don’t know they have it and neither do their doctors.”
A group of experts on COPD will be speaking at the Waverly Resource Library today from 1 until 3.
