Michael Ferguson says the corrections system isn’t supporting Indigenous people.
In his fall 2016 reports, the Federal Auditor General says as the number of Indigenous people in the justice system grows, it can’t provide them with the supports they need when they need them.
He says more than 75% of Indigenous offenders were sent to medium- or maximum-security institutions. He says their parole was delayed because they weren’t given access to rehabilitation programs quickly enough, leaving them less prepared as they re-enter society.
Ferguson adds two-thirds of indigenous inmates who are released were never put on parole.
Meanwhile the Grand Chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation says despite the focus on relations with Indigenous peoples, it’s still business as usual in Ottawa, and that needs to change.
