Shuniah wants you to know it’s a municipality, not a township.
Wendy Landry is now the town’s first mayor, following a unanimous decision from Council to change the title of its top elected official.
Landry says the term ‘reeve’ is historically held for villages, and Council felt it just didn’t fit the description. She says there are about 4,200 voters in Shuniah, noting the communty doubles in size during the summer months. As such, Landry says it was time to change the title to move business forward and rise Shuniah’s profile.
Landry adds there was a misunderstanding consistent across the community of what a reeve is. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
